Ernest graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1972 after serving in the Vietnam War as a member of the Marine Corps between 1960 and 1964. Upon receiving his BS in Social Science, Ernest began teaching in the Oakland Unified School District, where we would go on to teach in some of the most challenging educational environments in the city. He taught at McClymonds High School, Skyline High School, Oakland Technical High School, and, finally at Havenscourt Middle School, where he taught until his retirement in 2001, after 28 years of experience. During his teaching tenure Ernest also served as a basketball coach for ten years at Havenscourt Middle. After enjoying a year or so of full-time retirement working at home in his organic garden, Ernest joined Oakland Leaf in 2003 and became an integral leadership presence in every program.
