Events Coordinator
A Photograph Goes Here: Define VIA the CSS only!
Born and raised in the Southside of Chicago, I have experienced many different forms of racism and oppression being half Black and half Mexican. I constantly had issues with discipline in school growing up. By the time I reached high school, I had managed to get kicked out of every school I had attended; resulting in me having to move around a lot just so I could finish school.
Being in and out of juvenile facilities, I decided to educate myself and took it upon myself to finish high school. I went to a technical college to finish my high school diploma because I was not willing to settle for the choices and lack of opportunities other schools had to offer.
At 17, I started DJing and never stopped. The culture has been with me since. It led me to be a club resident DJ and, later, a music producer and event promoter. I moved to the Bay in 2005 to pursue a degree in Recording Arts and graduated in 2007 from Los Medanos College. Since landing in the Bay, I have worked as an educator in music at various non-profit organizations and schools. Dr. K. Wayne Yang and Christina Ree gave me a chance to be a DJ and Music Instructor at Avenues Project, my first love--hold on, my second love, because hip-hop is definitely my first. From there, I had a lot of doors open for me in the field of education: working at Oakland Leaf's Peace Camp, in juvenile hall with Community Works in Berkeley, as well as teaching at Youth Uprising as a DJ Instructor. In 2007, G Reyes and Mirella Rangel hired me as Event Coordinator to help manage and organize events, broaden communications in the organization, and to help make Leaf more visible to the community. Currently, I work with Leaf in that role, while still producing music and DJing as my alter ego, DJ Twelvz with my production company, Hungry Town Entertainment.
